Protection tools

Most licensed operators offer tools to frame your betting and protect yourself. Knowing them well means knowing how to set boundaries, take a break, or stop completely.

Part 1

The four tools

Deposit limit

Caps what is paid into the gambling account over a period.

Offered by most licensed operators.

Stake limit

Caps what is staked over a period.

Offered by most licensed operators.

Temporary self-exclusion

Blocks the account with one operator, for a chosen length of time.

Duration varies by operator, on that site only.

Country self-exclusion scheme

Where one exists, blocks access to the operators and offers covered by your country's scheme.

Scope and terms depend on your country (see the box).
Part 2 · Your turn

Lower at once, raise after a wait

A limit can be changed at any time. But not under the same conditions depending on whether you lower it or raise it. Choose an action.

Choose an action.

Why this waiting period? It is deliberate. A decision to raise a limit is often made right after a loss, in the heat of emotion. An increase may be subject to a waiting period depending on the country and operator, leaving time to think and preventing decisions made on impulse. A reduction, on the other hand, protects you: it takes effect at once.

One site, or all gambling

Single-site self-exclusion and your country's self-exclusion scheme, where one exists, do not block the same things. Click each one to see the principle.

Part 5

Your country's self-exclusion scheme

What this means: registering on your country's self-exclusion scheme, where one exists, is neither a rare nor a shameful step. The exact scope, duration and procedure are shown in the box above.

Key points

  • Set your limits on a calm day, not after a loss. Most licensed operators offer deposit and stake limits.
  • A reduction takes effect at once; an increase may be subject to a delay depending on the country. This waiting period protects you.
  • Single-site self-exclusion applies to one operator; your country's scheme, where one exists, covers all participating offers (see the box).
